polish individual reparations from the german state

Project co-financed by the state budget under the programme of the Ministry of Education and Science called „Science for Society”, project number NdS/545251/2022/2022

Ministry of education and science

Polish individual reparations from the German state for crimes committed by the Germans.

The project includes research whose aim is to develop a theoretical legal model to make it possible to hold the German state civilly liable for crimes committed by its functionaries during the Second World War (in particular genocide, mass murder, torture, but also plundering and destruction of property, repression of families of murdered prisoners, persecution of Poles as „subhumans,” etc.).

The project involves multifaceted research covering:

legal area – within the framework of the project only civil law claims will be analyzed, and due to the subject matter of the research, claims directed towards Germany and/or its authorities or its legal persons who are the beneficiaries of the things seized from the victims of the crimes will be particularly analyzed.

historical area – within this area, the issue of damages suffered by the inhabitants of the Zamość region as a result of warfare and German occupation in the years 1939 – 1945 will be analyzed.

Places of war crimes, executions of Zamość residents, or places where Polish property and cultural goods were plundered will be investigated and described. As part of the project, a visualization will be created to memorialize these places. It will be made available to all audiences as an application for educational purposes.

Project completion date: 2022/2024

In order to implement the above project, the Foundation has for several years been investigating the possibility of obtaining compensation from Germany for its World War II victims – Polish citizens who lost their property due to the genocidal policy of the occupier. We have asked the inhabitants of the Zamojszczyzna region to share their stories and documentation of the losses suffered during the pacification.

Our lawyers have identified the legal conditions for private individuals to apply to Germany for compensation for destroyed property. Particularly in the last 2 years, intensive work has led to the establishment of a method of making claims to Germany. We can say that we now have the knowledge of how to do this effectively, so we invite all those (or their heirs) who lost property as a result of German actions during World War II to contact us via the form below.

Our historians and lawyers will review the submissions and materials and, upon positive verification, we will contact you to conduct a personal interview and obtain representation for the lawyers representing those presenting claims against Germany.

Our program is about compensation for damages caused by Germany to private individuals, so the suitors will be private individuals, while the Polish League Against Defamation will support these individuals as part of its statutory activities.
