On August 1, 1944, the uprising – the uprising of Polish patriots – against the German occupier began. The Warsaw Uprising was filled with the heroic struggle of the lonely who faced the German army. On the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising – August 1st at 5pm, all of Warsaw – and with it all of Poland – pays tribute to the insurgents. This hour is referred to as „Hour W” – the symbolic „W” standing for Freedom in Polish. At this important moment, no matter what we do or where we are, we stand and silently commemorate the heroes of the fight for Poland.
Every year on August 1st, at 5pm, an event called „A Living Sign for the Warsaw Uprising” takes place at Castle Square in Warsaw. Hundreds of people gather in the square and together form a Living Sign – the Anchor. This is a symbolic event to pay tribute to the insurgents and celebrate their indomitable spirit of fighting for independence.
The Polish League Against Defamation is a co-organizer of the action, so we warmly encourage everyone to take part in this event that unites generations and different social circles. By participating in the „Living Sign for the Warsaw Uprising” we express our respect for the history and sacrifice of the generations who fought for the homeland. It is also an opportunity to educate and promote historical memory both in Poland and abroad.
We invite you on August 1st, 2023, from 4:00 pm on Castle Square (by the Sigismund’s Column), let’s gather together to form the symbol of Fighting Poland, in this way we will honor the memory of those who shed their blood in the name of freedom and love for the Fatherland. This is a unique opportunity to express our gratitude and respect for the Warsaw Insurgents and remember their heroism and sacrifice for our freedom.
Our sincere thanks go to our Donors. Thanks to your support we were able to purchase almost 500 pins with the logo of the „Living Sign”. This symbolic souvenir will be given to the participants of the „Living Sign for the Warsaw Uprising” event.
May the anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising be a moment of reflection and inspiration for future generations, so that we never forget this important event in the history of Poland.
HONOR AND GLORY TO THE HEROES!
